Date - Monday, October 30th at 11:30AM
(Virtual Event via Zoom)
Dr. Valdez is a Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Leiden, Netherlands.
Her research intersects translated health communication, audiovisual communication,
and machine translation, engaging directly with the target communities.
This lecture will focus on the translation of health information for expert and lay
audiences from two different but complementary points of view: the perspective of
the translator and the perspective of the reader or user of translated health information.
We will also delve into translation technologies, including computer-aided translation
tools and machine translation, and their role in the mediation of translated medical texts.
To this end, we will discuss questions such as: What type of challenges do translators
face when translating for different audiences? How is translation technology used to
facilitate translators’ work? And how is technology used by users? What are the ethical
questions to consider when using translation technologies? What do we know and what
do we still need to learn about the use of translation technologies for the translation of
medical texts
This talk will be conducted in Spanish and Portuguese,
and she will include interactive activities for both speaker groups.
